Abstract

The cross-cultural families constitute an expanding phenomenon in the Italian context. Starting from the perspective of the cultural psychology, the aim of this research is to study the coping strategies that these families adopt to face situations of their everyday life where cultural differences become salient (educative choices for children , relationship with the social context and families of origin), and the factors that influence such strategies. An individual semi-structured interview has been administered to 40 partners of 20 intercultural couples. The results showed that the couple strategies did not depend on partners’ cultures but they were contingent on the specific situation families have to cope with. These strategies are the results of individual, interpersonal and social processes
