Abstract

The aims of this study were a) to investigate the quality of paternal and maternal attachment in adolescents from Italian, mixed, and migrant families; and b) to study the association between family relations and emotional problems in adolescence. A multi-method approach was used: 509 adolescents (55% boys) participated in a quantitative study and 143 adolescents (47% boys) participated in a qualitative study. Results showed that adolescents from Italian or mixed family differed from their migrant peers since they reported more frequently a strong attachment to both parents and less frequently a low attachment to both. Moreover, migrant adolescents exhibited higher emotional problems than their peers from Italian and mixed families. Finally, adolescents with a strong attachment to both parents displayed the lowest emotional problems
