Abstract

Based on research contributions collected in this first monographic volume, this article addresses several crucial aspects which describe the immigration history and the immigrants’ encounter with the new reality. The transition from the idea of "multiculturalism" to "interculture" characterizes the various contributions, with the aim of exploring geographical, mental and emotional changes experienced by migrants. Many issues are discussed: the migration project and pre-migration variables, the initial phase of migrant's settlement in the host country (political and legislative system, labour market, support networks), the next stage of stabilization of migrants and related social dynamics and challenges for Western societies (promotion of social well being, social justice).
