Abstract

Aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between language brokering and psychological well-being in a sample of Filipino adolescents. Previous research has documented that language brokering is positively associated with faster gaining of social and language skills, but sometimes also with emotional maladjustment and developmental disadvantages. Participants were 87 Filipino adolescents (51 girls and 36 boys; age-range: 14-17 years), all fluent in reading and speaking Italian language. Depression, anxiety and emotional stability were selected as dependent variables, since they reflect important dimensions of psychological well-being. Results showed significant differences between boys and girls, confirming the gender specificity of this role in different cultures, and also the lack of significant negative associations between language brokering and psychological well-being of Filipino adolescents.
