| Abstract | This paper aims firstly to introduce and discuss the phenomenon of domestic violence and the development of social policy and services in Romania, in its transition from a former communist country (before 1989) to an actual European member (since 2007). Secondly, we will introduce one of the pioneering projects for Preventing and Combating Domestic Violence, developed within the organization “Home of Hope”. Its foundation, evolution, theoretical approach and methodology of intervention are described. The experience of grass-root professionals working in the project is summarized in a section on results, what works, some lessons learned and recommendations for policy and practice in the field of gender-based and family violence. |
